  • Snowsports Ski & Snowboard Programme

Palmerston North Boys High School has an active and high achieving Snow-sports Program incorporating skiing and Snowboarding at a competitive and recreational level.

For many years this has been organised through the PNBHS Snow-seekers Club. PNBHS is fortunate to be situated within a day-trip distance from the ski-fields and draws on a strong local reservoir of raw talent. This formula allows the PNBHS Snow-sports program to develop highly capable Skiers and Boarders through to the next level.

During the winter season Snow-seekers run two weekend day trips to Turoa or Whakapapa ski-fields for students who wish to Ski or Board on a relaxed day out.

The emphasis on the Snow-sports program is to provide coaching and training opportunities at a high performance ski and board level. Students can enter this program at most levels and with commitment enjoy rapid skill improvement. Places in the ski and Snowboard competition and Development squad are limited.

Trials are conducted early in the season to select the Ski and Snowboard competition teams.

There are weekly training and coaching sessions on the mountain. This is on a day trip basis. Professional coaching and training is provided and is intensively skill based learning. This is a school day and the rigour of learning and teaching is transferred to the outdoor classroom.

The coaching standard and training facilities have proved excellent in advancing individual mountain skills. PNBHS has become regarded as a prominent Snow-sports School offering enthusiastic students opportunities to train, compete and enjoy mountain challenges. PNBHS students have produced numerous North Island Secondary School Championship medalists.

PNBHS sees Snow-sports as an important sport for young people, participation which can be life- long at a level of the individual's choice.

All Snow-sports programs are offered on a user pays basis. To maintain access to the programs fees are kept to a minimum.

To join the Snow-sports Program students must have an acceptable academic record and be able to function safely in an alpine environment.
