1st XV v Lindisfarne Match Report

The 1st XV kicked off their 2017 campaign with a game against Lindisfarne College in an exceptionally balmy Napier. The team absorbed a lot of early pressure with Lindisfarne having a swag of possession. The defensive work was positive however and a turnover led to a counterattack opportunity to open the scoring against the run of play. Lindisfarne scored soon after to take the lead but that was the only time they would cross the chalk. Possession stakes evened up and some strong running from Jackson Scully, Gus Robertson and the explosive Michael Halatuituia had the team going forward with three further tries scored in the first half.

The second half saw some superb team play with multiple phases able to be strung together. The weight of possession resulted in a further 6 tries being scored, some of which the result of pleasing levels of support play. Darius Mafileo’o impressed with some surging carries , Tamati Ruawai and Sam Stewart became more and more prominent as the half progressed. The work and effort of the younger members making their debut at this level was exceptionally heartening going forward.

The final score was 60 – 7, reflecting a good first up team effort.
