1st XV v Napier BHS - Polson Banner Match Report

The 1st XV started exceptionally well with a converted try after five minutes following some good close work.  Napier replied with some excellent rolling mauls from lineouts however excellent defence from the home side managed to hold them out. The pattern for the game was set early and the condition of the field started to deteriorate quickly meaning this was going to be a game of trench warfare.  The two forward packs in particular went hammer and tongs at each other and the competition was a willing affair.  Napier scored an excellent try midway through the first half to close the gap to 7-5 before we scored another penalty to take a 10-5 lead into halftime.

The second half saw us play the territory game exceptionally well with astute kicking from all the backs. While this didn’t transfer into points, the pressure was on the opposition to clear their try line and score points in what was effectively a quagmire between the 22’s.  With time winding down, Napier finally got territory to match their possession and while we held them out for an extended period of time, they managed to scramble a try to gain the lead with 2 minutes remaining.  From the kick off, we regained possession and after some surging pick and go earned a chance to win the game.  Unfortunately we were not able to convert and Napier ran out the victors 12-10.

The game was an enthralling contest and we played excellent mud rugby.  We had our chances but we weren’t able to convert the territory into points despite coming close on a number of occasions. The team gets a chance for redemption in the result at least when we play Napier in ten days’ time for the national knock out competition but will have to wait till next year to win back the Polson Banner.

The team would like to thank the 1950’s reunion group for their time and counsel prior to the game.  Their support on the side line was also gratefully appreciated.
