ACC Concussion Presentation

At assembly on Friday 28 July, Mr Nick Chong from ACC made a presentation about the symptoms and effects of concussion.  Concussion injuries can occur in a number of situations, in particular in contact sports.  Concussions are usually associated with rugby, although can occur in any sport, especially those involving contact between players such as basketball, football and hockey.  It is important that concussion injuries are treated seriously in order to avoid long term damage.  If you believe your son has received a head knock, or a strong physical contact that might have affected his brain - quite literally forcing it to move suddenly and forcefully within his skull - a medical opinion from a doctor should be sought.  It is vital that you notify the school if your son is concussed so that appropriate protocols can be put in place to assist with his recovery.  We stress this point as we have been made aware of some situations in which young men and parents have elected not to pass this information on in order to avoid the 'stand down' period (from ALL physical activity) associated with recovery.  We appreciate many young men's eagerness to play.  However, decisions in the best interests of their long term health are essential.  If you would like further information about our concussion protocols, please contact our Director of Sport, Mr Peter Finch finchp@pnbhs.school.nz
