Year 12 students Luke August (left) and Taine Davis (right) have been selected to spend ten days in Hawaii during December to visit the Indigenous Science Academy operating there.  Luke and Taine have both been part of Massey University’s Pūhoro STEM Academy over the last two years and will be accompanied by eight students from other local schools, as well as Massey University staff, on the trip.  Taine explained that they were selected because of the leadership they had exhibited, their good record of attendance at tutorials and their consequently strong academic performance.  In Hawaii they hope to be able to interact with students working in a similar programme, share ideas and gain further insight into the career and study opportunities available through study in the sciences.

Luke and Taine’s involvement in the Pūhoro Academy has encouraged them to follow a science pathway at school, with Taine enrolled in Level Three Biology in 2018 and Luke in Level Three Chemistry and Physics.  Both Luke and Taine identified the support of their teachers, the tutorials provided through the academy, and the work of the co-ordinators from Massey University, as being important to their academic success.  #PNBHSpeople
