1st XI Cricket Development Tour Match Report

Game 1 v Kent Street Senior High School

Wake up call at 6:20am - breakfast 6:45 - on the bus at 8:30 - at Kent Street Senior High School by 9am - game time 10am.

Kent Street Senior High School is a large co-ed State school in Perth. They themselves have recently returned from a successful three week tour of the UK.

The day was spectacular! Fine with a slight breeze and warming to an impressive 30 degree high, stark contrast to the Palmerston North weather we left behind some 24 hours earlier.

Captain Tom O'Connor lost the toss and the school was asked to bat first. Openers Whetu na Nagara and Trey Bidois got the team away to a steady yet cautious start putting on 38 for the first wicket.  Two wickets fell in quick succession leaving the team at 40 for 2. Some handy contributions from the middle order including Tom O'Connor 14 and Thomas Walshe 17 had the score well setup at 124 for 3. The innings was being largely held together by a substantial contribution from Floyd na Nagara who made 51 off 85 balls, including 4 fours. Another flurry of wickets fell around Braden Rowe, who scored a run-a-ball 14 n.o. at the death, reduced the school to a slightly sub-par 166 all out.

The Kent Street reply was sketchy to begin with as they slumped to 15 for 2 (which included a stunning, diving, two-handed catch at backward point by Thomas Walshe). However, our opposition recovered, largely due to a counter attacking and aggressive innings from their captain who blasted 46 runs in quick time. When he was deceived by leg spinner Braden Rowe, two more wickets fell in quick succession to see the game evenly poised. Even the weather lost some of its sting as the "Freemantle Doctor" made an appearance and some high cloud rolled in. Jack Harris and James Stratton both bowled with good energy and control. Unfortunately for the school, Kent Street produced a telling and timely partnership to swing the game in their favour. They won the game by 4 wickets with 4 overs to spare.

Tomorrow we play Christ Church Grammar School at the unusually early time of 8:30am which is hard to believe.
