Our final Leadership Week presentation was from Mr. Wiremu Te Awe Awe.  Mr. Te Awe Awe is based at Te Rangimarie Marae at Rangiotū, which was built in 1858 to commemorate peace between Ngāti Raukawa and Rangitāne.  He is prominent in the Manawatū community, serves on the Horizons Regional Council and is an iwi representative with the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Some of Mr. Te Awe Awe’s key messages included:

·       Treat other people the way that you would like to be treated.

·       Forgiveness, empathy and understanding other people’s perspectives are important skills for a leader to develop.

·       Always tell the truth – be honest with yourself and others.  Sometime the truth might have short-term negative consequences for you, but long term having a clear conscience and knowing that we have taken responsibility for our actions is much better

Mr. Te Awe Awe explained that striving to keep people united and together is an important part of the work being done at Te Rangimarie Marae.  Not everyone will agree with decisions – but having a disagreement does not mean the end of a relationship.  It is important to work hard to understand other people’s perspectives and to accept that there will be differences.

We would like to thank Mr. Te Awe Awe for taking the time to share his thoughts with us.
