2015 New Zealand Research Honours Awards Ceremony

Report written by Mrs Fletcher:

On Tuesday 10th November, Mrs Fletcher was kindly invited to attend the 2015 New Zealand Research Honours Awards ceremony in Auckland. It was hosted by the Royal Society of New Zealand. The awards recognise New Zealand’s top researchers and scholars and celebrate their dedication and commitment to the pursuit of knowledge. The Rutherford Medal –highest honour awarded by the Royal Society of New Zealand was one of 13 medals awarded on Tuesday night.

Palmerston North Boys’ High School 2014 old boy Kyle Robertson had completed his GOLD Crest Award in January 2015, an 18 month honours level research project completed during year 12 and 13, and was receiving his GOLD Crest medal at this prestigious event. Congratulations Kyle.

It was a fanatastic evening and great to see all the amazing research going on in New Zealand. Science can take you on so many different paths, they had all followed a path of doing something they enjoyed or had an interest in it.

Kyle and Mrs Fletcher were also honoured to have their photo taken with Dr Siouxsie (Susie) Wiles. Dr Siouxsie Wiles describes herself as a microbiologist and bioluminescence enthusiast. Head of the Bioluminescent Superbugs Lab at the University of Auckland, Siouxsie combines her twin passions to understand infectious diseases. In a nutshell, Siouxsie and her team make nasty bacteria glow in the dark. She was also the 2013 recipient of the Callaghan Medal (The Callaghan Medal is for outstanding contribution to science communication and raising public awareness of the value of science to human progress). Dr Siouxsie Wiles says she is coming to Palmerston North in February 2016, so keep an eye out, otherwise she can be found on twitter @SiouxsieW.https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/1680515370/siouxsie-3.JPG

We were also honoured to get our photo taken by Dr Michelle Dickinson, aka Nano Girl, who won the 2015 Callaghan Medal at this Research Honours Dinner. You may have seen her on TV, she often appears on the Paul Henry Show and she is currently touring New Zealand –she was in Palmerston North on 2nd November with NANOGIRL and the incredible world off nanotechnology – did you go?
