    2024 Badminton

Badminton is a very popular winter sport at Palmerston North Boys' High School played by almost 100 students each year in Terms 2 and 3. Registration will start in April and more information will be posted in the Daily Notices in mid-March for the Manawatu Secondary School competition running from May to August.

    Representative Teams

The top two PNBHS badminton teams (Senior A and B) compete in competitions throughout New Zealand every year such as the Super Eight Tournament (a tournament involving eight boys schools in the lower North Island and Hamilton) and the New Zealand Secondary Schools Nationals competitions involving as many as 16 to 25 boys schools from around NZ.

In 2020, the Senior A Team won the Super Eight Tournament in Napier, retrieving the shield back from 2018.  The Senior B Team also placed sixth overall, a fantastic result for their first tournament participation experience. The 2021 Super Eight Tournament will be held in New Plymouth and we wish our team success in retaining the shield.

The Junior A team also won the 2020 Central Regional Juniors Competition in Wellington, winning gold in count-back in an exciting post-COVID match. The boys received medals for their efforts and we hope that it will spur them on their future game commitments.

Training for the competitive teams is on Mondays after school and Sunday mornings from Term 2. The cost for this will be $65.00 per person plus travelling expenses if selected to represent the school in tournaments. For more information, please see Mrs. Young-Wilson in G1 or the International Office.

    Social Badminton

For those boys who enjoy the game of badminton or want to give it a go, there is a 12-week secondary school competition organised by Badminton Manawatu for Junior and Senior teams of 4.  It is on every Monday after school in the second term at Arena Manawatu on Pascal Street from  May to August.

Registration is open until Friday 5th of April.  Participation Cost is $72.00 per student. For more information and competition dates/format, please see Mrs. Young-Wilson.

    Uniform and Cost

All players will be expected to play in full PNBHS Badminton Uniform (available from the School Uniform Shop), white socks and sneakers with non-marking soles when representing our school. See above for costs relating to your participation.
