    Otago Junior Mathematics Competition

This mathematics competition is for students in years 9 to 11. Every student throughout New Zealand sits the competition on exactly the same day, usually a Wednesday in late March or early April.

The competition lasts for one hour and in this time students answer four or five questions. The emphasis is on problem solving, so expect surprises!

Mathematical skills are important, but so is careful reading. Students who read the questions carefully and work out exactly what is being asked generally do better than those who jump in and write down the first thing that springs to mind.

Participation in this competition is expected of all Accelerate and potential Accelerate students in years 9 to 11. It’s an opportunity for students’ mathematical ability to be identified and recognised by the school as well as nationally.

    The Australian Mathematics Competition

The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) sponsored by the Commonwealth Bank was introduced in Australia in 1978 as the first Australia-wide mathematics competition for students.

Since then it has served almost all Australian secondary schools and many primary schools, providing feedback and enrichment to schools and students. It has become the largest single event on the Australian education calendar, allowing students to attempt the same tasks on the same day in over 30 countries around the globe. By 2015, the AMC has attracted more than 14.5 million entries.

The AMC is a fun competition with many of the problems set in situations familiar to students and showing the relevance of mathematics in their everyday lives. The problems are also designed to stimulate discussion and can be used by teachers and students as springboards for investigation.

Participation in this competition is expected of all Accelerate and potential Accelerate students in years 9 to 13. It’s an opportunity for students’ mathematical ability to be identified and recognised by the school as well as throughout Australasia.
