    Level Three History of Art – 13VAH

    Course Content: The History of Art is the ultimate Humanities subject. We live in a world of images and The History of Art offers a way of engaging with that world. 

    Students will learn how to: interpret what they see, how to write a logical and convincing argument, how to conduct purposeful research and how to think on their feet.
    By studying Level 3 History of Art students will gain valuable insight into the understanding of culture, art, economics, social class, politics, philosophy and technology of eighteenth century Europe. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the context in which art was made viewed and valued through the depiction of men and women, work and leisure, heroes, contemporary events and the increase of modernity.

    Students will explore the following art styles: Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Art Nouveau, Architectural Revivalism and Iron and Steel innovations.

    Prerequisites
    : Ability in English is necessary, as all internal and external Achievement Standards are essay based. You will need to have 15 credits or more in NCEA Level 1 English, History or Classical Studies or in consultation with the Teacher in Charge. Ability in Art is NOT necessary.

    Assessment: Level 3 Art History is a 16 credit course offering four Achievement Standards.
    Examine how media are used to create effects in art works - internally assessed 4 credits
    Communicate understanding of an Art History topic - internally assessed 4 credits
    Communicate a considered personal response to art works - internally assessed 4 credits
    Examine the effects of formal elements of art works - externally assessed 4 credits
