    WHAT IS HEALTH?

    In Health and Physical Education, the focus is on the well-being of the students themselves, of other people, and of society through learning in health-related and movement contexts.

    Four underlying and interdependent concepts are at the heart of this learning area:

    • Hauora – a Māori philosophy of well-being that includes the dimensions taha wairua, taha hinengaro, taha tinana, and taha whānau, each one influencing and supporting the others.
    • Attitudes and values – a positive, responsible attitude on the part of students to their own well-being; respect, care, and concern for other people and the environment; and a sense of social justice.
    • The socio-ecological perspective – a way of viewing and understanding the interrelationships that exist between the individual, others, and society.
    • Health promotion – a process that helps to develop and maintain supportive physical and emotional environments and that involves students in personal and collective action.

    Knowledge, skills and experiences gained in Health Education are beneficial for many types of occupations. Students may want to take this course to learn more about their own health, or they may be looking for a career in the following fields: Health and Physical Education Teacher; Personal Trainer; Nurse; Dentist; Doctor; Physiotherapist; Occupational Therapist; Speech and Language Therapist; Health Practitioner; Midwife; Chiropractor; Paramedic; Psychologist; Social worker; Police Officer; Primary or Early Childhood Teacher; Health Promoter; Media Campaigner; News Reporter; Special Needs Worker; Armed Forces; Police; Lawyer or Politician.

    Health is a valuable subject choice for students wishing to pursue learning that will take them into further study related to the social and health sciences such as education, psychology, sociology, philosophy, politics, law, economics, medicine, and careers in any field where they work with people, such as education, health, justice, and social services.

    LEVEL 1 NCEA HEALTH

    This subject is eligible for subject endorsement. 


    Major focus: personal health promotion, well-being and goal attainment.

    • Personal well-being / Hauora  -  this is about making a commitment to making a small change to one's own well-being by setting and achieving goals.   
    • Positive Sexuality  -  learn how to be a confident and know how to express yourself using assertive and effective communication skills  
    • Food and Nutrition  -  learn what influences the choices we make around our nutrition and how we can improve our health outcomes
    • Drugs and Alcohol  -  making the right decisions for one's own well-being and those around you
    • Managing Change  -  know how to cope with change and how to build one's resilience and abilities to help oneself and those around you

    LEVEL 2 NCEA HEALTH

    This subject is eligible for subject endorsement. 


    Focus: Health promotion of individuals and groups.

    • Health promotion within our community - you will work in a group, or by yourself to enhance well-being of a group within our community
    • Gender and Sexuality  -  investigate what influences the way we are and behave and how we may work to ensure that well-being is enhanced 
    • Mental Well-being and Resilience  -  recognising factors that can support change in our lives and how people might best develop strategies to cope with changes
    • Personal Safety - recognising situations that might be unsafe at a personal and interpersonal level and develop strategies that we can use to support and help ourselves and others

    LEVEL 3 NCEA HEALTH

    This subject is eligible for subject endorsement. 


    Focus: Health issues in New Zealand and in other countries  

    • New Zealand Health Issue - student choice based on a contemporary Health related issue currently facing New Zealand.  The teacher will also provide options and will guide you through the research and investigative process.
    • Health Practices - comparison of ways of dealing with a student nominated health condition.  The teacher will provide the framework within which students will examine a health condition and at least three ways of helping with the condition.  
    • Ethical Issues - students will analyse a contemporary ethical dilemma by looking at the issue from different perspectives. 
    • Investigate global health issues of current concern
