Playing the first game of the Central
Districts Qualifying Quad, Bryn Wilson won the toss and elected to bat first on
a hard but used wicket. Despite an early wicket, the 1st XI made
steady progress with a 58 run second wicket stand. Unfortunately, the middle
order failed to fire and it was left up to the lower middle and tail to bat the
full 50 overs. They managed to achieve this and PNBHS scored 163 for 9,
probably leaving 30 runs out on the field. Curtis Heaphy scored 29, Rishabh De
31 and Max Harris 34.
After an some inspiring words at the break, the team took to the field with renewed vigour. An inspired spell from opening bowlers Thomas Kirk and Rishabh De, supported by excellent catching, soon had the opposition in trouble at 9 for 3 from 10 overs. The pressure was kept up by Bryn Wilson and Finn Martin, who were accurate and threatening throughout. The pressure proved to be too much and Hastings capitulated for 30 from 20.4 overs in a complete performance in the field. Finn Martin took 2 for 9, Rishabh De 2 for 5 and Bryn Wilson 5 for 8.
The 1st XI now play Nelson College on Tuesday at 10 AM to find the CD qualifier for National Finals in December.
