North Island Secondary School Road Championship

Once again, the North Island Cycling Championships were held at Lake Karapiro, Cambridge.  With 38 riders competing from the school in the team time trial, road race and criterium events. The team was looking forward to defend the overall top school trophy they have won for the past 2 years. However, the team was missing a number of key riders who couldn't compete due to injury or other cycling comments which had an effect on our build up to this event. 

Team Time Trial (16km)- Saturday 7 July

With 38 teams entered in the Under 16 Team Time Trial we had 5 teams entered. With perfect riding conditions for all riders it meant for fast racing. All our junior team's road exceptionally well over the 16 km course.

Results: 

Junior E Team- 21st

Junior D Team- 19th

Junior C Team- 12th

Junior B Team- 10th

Junior A Team- 2nd

The winning of a silver medal for the Junior A team of Adam Francis, Fergus Lloyd, Ben Orr and Ewan Cousins and also the Junior B team finishing inside the top 10 was a great achievement and started the weekend of to a fantastic start.

In the Under 20's team time trial we had 3 teams entered, competing against 26 other teams. With a number of late changes to our teams due to riders been unavailable all our teams were going into this event with limited training time together. 

Results:

Senior C Team- 19th

Senior B Team- 11th

Senior A Team- 3rd

For our Senior A team (Dylan Simpson, Adam Martin, Max Taylor, Jamie Dennis, Aidan Jones) to walk away with a bronze medal having ridden only once together as a team before and with two members of the team only Year 11's was a great result. Both the Senior B and C teams also road exceptionally well.

 

Road Race - Saturday 7 July

Top 10 finishes in the road race were:

Under 14 Road Race- 26km

Sam Wade 7th

Under 15 Road Race- 26km

Chenuka Rajapakse 3rd

Under 16 Road Race- 45km

Ewan Cousins 3rd

Under 17 Road Race- 54km

Aiden Jones 6th

Under 20 Road Race- 54km

Criterium - Sunday 8 July

Top 10 finishes in the criterium were:

Under 14 B Criterium- Levi Humphrey 4th

Under 15 B Criterium- Adam Wilson 1st

Under 15 A Criterium- Chenuka Rarapakse 4th

Under 16 B Criterium- Jack Carson 1st, Logan McKinnon 4th, Sam Parry 5th, Liam Ainsworth 7th, Nathaniel Leask 8th

Under 16 A Criterium- Adam Francis 2nd, Ben Irvine 6th, Fergus Lloyd 8th

Under 17 B Criterium- Sam Russell 4th

Under 17 A Criterium- Aiden Jones 2nd

Under 20 B Criterium- Luke Scott 2nd, Cam Jones 7th

Under 20 A Criterium- Adam Martin 2nd, Max Taylor 9th, Thomas Stannard 10th

In the overall top school, the team came away with 1st place to win this event 3 years in a row is outstanding. All members of the team played a big part in this success over the event. 

 

North Island Secondary Schools Track Championships

Sunday 8-9 July

Avanti Velodrome

A small but strong team represented the school at the track championships. All riders competed in the omnium race the pentathlon of cycling. Each competitor rides in three events - scratch race, point’s race and keirin race- all of which must be completed. Along with the omnium race, riders also competed in the team's sprint and pursuit events.  

 

Under 16 Boy’s Pursuit team (Jack Carson, Ewan Cousins, Ben Irvine, Fergus Lloyd) - 3rd Place

Under 20 Boy’s Pursuit team- 4th

Under 16 Boy’s Sprint team (Jack Carson, Ewan Cousins, Ben Irvine) - 2nd Place

Under 20 Boy’s Sprint team (Angus Claasen, Ethan Craine, Michael Richmond) - 2nd

 

Under 20 Omnium Results:

Angus Claasen-4th

Under 17 Omnium Results:

Michael Richmond -3rd

Aiden Jones- 11th

Under 16 Omnium Results:

Ewan Cousins- 2nd

Ben Irvine- 4th

Jack Carson- 9th

In the top overall school competition, the team finished 3rd. This was a great achievement with the small numbers we had in our team and with a number of riders riding there first competitive track event- the future looks bright for our track team in the coming years.
