Cricket Report PNBHS 1st XI VS Palmerston CC - 04/11/18

With the two days of rain having penetrated under the covers of Manawaroa 5, a decision was made to move the match to Manawaroa 3 which had had the benefit of the gale-force winds blowing all morning. Nevertheless, the start was delayed until 2 PM and it was decided to play a 30 over-per-side game.

With five regular players away on representative duties or study leave, it was a young side that took the field for this game. Captain, Sam Russell won the toss and decided to bowl on a wicket which was still a little sticky on top. Bowling was challenging with the wind making it difficult to stand still, let alone run in and bowl. The Boys’ High bowlers stuck manfully to their task, however and soon made inroads into the batting. The first change bowlers made life difficult for the opposition and kept the run-rate down while taking regular wickets. They were well backed up in field too. The pressure soon told on the batsmen and Palmerston were dismissed for 79 in the 27th over. Thomas Kirk took 2 for 25, Levi Woolston 2 for 3 from 6 overs (on debut for the 1st XI) and Rishabh De 4 for 19.

The PNBHS batting effort made a stuttering start with the top order struggling to come to terms with the conditions. At one stage, the 1st XI was 26 for 5 after 11 overs. This brought together Max Harris and Campbell Martin (on debut) and they managed to stop the rot and add solidity to the innings. After they had dug themselves in, they were able to play some shots and guide the team to victory in the 23rd over. Campbell had a responsible knock of 15 not out and Max made a match-winning 29 not out. PNBHS won by 5 wickets.
