Bryn Wilson won the toss and elected to bat after a delayed start on the Bert Sutcliffe oval at Lincoln. An early wicket stalled the scoring and some effective bowling meant that the 1st XI had to work hard for every run and the first 10 only yielded 25 runs. This trend continued but PNBHS was able to keep wickets in hand in order to accelerate later in the innings. Unfortunately, the momentum stalled and a flurry of wickets followed as the batsmen tried to “up the ante”. Sam Russell and Max Harris were able to boost the run-rate with useful cameos but a further 4 quick wickets left numbers 10 and 11 with almost 6 overs to bat. Thomas Kirk and Levi Woolston were not daunted by this task and stayed cool to put on a 46 run partnership to allow the team to finish on 200 for 9 from 50 overs. Thomas scored 20 not out, Curtis Heaphy 31 and Bryn Wilson 46.

The King’s innings started with the PNBHS opening bowlers keeping the batsmen in check with some good lines. This allowed the 1st change bowlers to snag a wicket each as the opposition batsmen looked to release the shackles. This kept the scoring quiet and when the 4th wicket fell in the 31st over, they had only scored 100 runs. Unfortunately, the normally reliable PNBHS spinners were unable to keep up the pressure as they erred in line and length. This allowed the King’s batsmen to establish themselves and finish with some lusty blows to win the game in 42 overs. Bryn Wilson took 2 for 34.

Not an ideal start to the tournament, but all is not lost as the team has the opportunity to redeem itself in the next game.
