PNBHS 1st XI Cricket vs United CC – 02/01/19

With the first day of the 2-day match having been rained out, this game was played as a 100 over, single innings match.

Jack Wenham won the toss and asked United to bat first on a fresh-looking Fitzherbert Park No 2 pitch. This ploy seemed to have backfired as the United openers went hard at the new ball and had reached 89 in the 14thover when the first wicket fell. The PNBHS bowlers stuck manfully to their task and, once the second and third wickets went down, were able to slow the run-rate considerably. Three run-outs put pressure on their incoming batsmen and wickets fell with regularity to see them all out for 201 in the 45thover. Thomas Kirk took 4 for 42.

The run chase started brightly in the face of some accurate pace bowling. The loss of the opening batsmen brought together Curtis Heaphy and Ruben Love, who put together a partnership of 72 to blunt the opposition attack and put the team in a position to push for the win. This looked likely as Mr Davidson joined Curtis at the crease. Unfortunately, they both fell after the team added 50 runs and it was decided to “shut up shop” and bat for the draw. This was achieved as the 1stXI finished the day on 166 for 7. Ruben Love made 26, Jack Wenham 28, Mr Davidson 35 and Curtis Heaphy 64.

Congratulations to Josh West, who was presented with his 1stXI cap by Old Boy, Jack Harris.

All-in-all, a good day’s cricket from the team.
