PNBHS 1stXI Cricket vs Napier BHS – 2 Day Challenge Shield – 07/02/19 Day 1

Jack Wenham won the toss and chose to bat first on a typical slow and low PNBHS No1. The first 2 wickets fell within the first 5 overs and this trend continued as the 1stXI slumped to 36 for 4. It was then that the fightback started, with the lower-middle order getting their heads down and fighting for every run. This allowed the tail to wag and the team ended up scoring a creditable 190 all out in 66.4 overs. Ruben Love scored 23, Hugo Wakeling 24, Regan Fleming 38 and No 9, Thomas Kirk 48.

The Napier innings started slowly, with the batsmen finding it difficult to score. This gave the bowlers confidence and led to 2 wickets falling in the 8thand 10thovers. The incoming batsmen then played it safe and they finished the day on 46 for 2 from 28 overs. Josh West was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 6 from 5 overs.

The Challenge Shield match resumed with Napier on 46 for 2 and progress was slow, with stoic defence interspersed with a wicket every 10-or-so overs. The opposition seemed to be determined to bat all day, forgoing the chance to challenge for The Shield. The PNBHS bowlers did not make their task difficult, with some wayward bowling making long stays at the crease easy. Only one of the Napier batsmen made use of the opportunity to score a well-compiled century as the 1stXI wilted in the field. They eventually declared on 249 for 9 after batting for 98 overs. Jack Wenham took 2 for 59, while Josh West returned figures of 3 for 28.

With nothing to gain, PNBHS got in 1 and a ½ hours’ worth of batting before the game was called off by mutual agreement with ½ an hour to go, Finishing on 45 for 2.

PNBHS retain the challenge shield with a draw.
