1st XI Cricket Premier A T20 Competition – 02/03/2019

Game 1 VS Freyberg CC

PNBHS won the toss and decided to bowl to a Freyberg side full of reps and first-class players. The bowlers started well and kept the opposition in check, taking regular wickets. The inevitable charge in the final overs yielded more runs than Boys’ High would have liked but a score of 146 for 5 was satisfactory, considering the batting line-up. Levi Woolston was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 22.

The 1st XI openers found it difficult to score against some top-class bowling, but sharp running between the wickets kept the scoreboard ticking over. Scoreboard pressure eventually led to inevitable run-outs, but the PNBHS batsmen kept to their task and some lusty hitting from the middle order accelerated the scoring until they ran out of overs to finish on 103 for 5. Jack Wenham scored 21, Campbell Martin 22 not out and Regan Fleming 30 not out.

Game 2 VS United CC

Jack Wenham lost the toss and PNBHS were asked to bat first. A sprightly start by the openers had the team on 42 in the 5th over before the first wicket fell. The 2nd wicket partnership took them to 126 in the 18th over before the closing dash saw a flurry of wickets and the 1st XI finishing on 136 for 5. Curtis Heaphy made 36 and Jack Wenham celebrated a long-awaited return to form with 53.

A past-pupil-laden opposition batting card started aggressively and continued in this vein. Despite this, and some tired-looking fielding, the Boys’ High bowlers gave good account of themselves and can count themselves unlucky not to have snared more wickets. United passed the score in the 17th over with 3 wickets down. Josh West bowled particularly well and took 3 for 15.

All-in-all it was a positive day’s cricket for a depleted 1st XI team.
