PNBHS 1st XI Cricket vs Auckland Grammar School – 3 Day Traditional – 09/03/19 - Day 1

After a delay of 2 hours owing to a damp pitch, play got underway with Auckland batting. The PNBHS opening bowlers made life difficult, bowling with accuracy to make scoring tough and taking the first wicket in the 10th over with the score on 8. Unfortunately, the spin-bowlers were unable to keep this up and proved to be expensive, allowing the opposition batsmen to score freely. The day progressed in the same vein, with the quicker bowlers keeping it tight and the spinners loosening the grip on the reins.

By the 6pm close of play, Grammar had advanced to 201 for 4 off of 85 overs to set up the next two days. Josh West was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 26 from 18 overs.

Resuming at 201 for 4, Auckland continued apace and batted the entire morning session and after lunch to be all out for 299. Josh West continued the good work from day 1 to take 4 for 35 from 36 overs and Jack Wenham chipped in with 4 for 61.

The PNBHS innings started with the Batsmen under pressure on a fading pitch. The openers held out until the 15th over before 2 wickets fell. This was followed by a solid 3rd wicket partnership. The Boys’ High batsmen toiled hard against a variety of accurate bowling and finished the day on 122 for 5, needing another 27 to avoid the follow-on. Ruben Love scored 25 and Henry Deans is on 30 not out.

This sets up an intriguing 3rd day, with Grammar needing an outright win to claim the Oram Cup.

177 runs behind and 5 wickets in hand, meant that PNBHS would have to dig in to avoid a follow-on on day 3. The batsmen did this in spades with a 70 run partnership for the 6th wicket and an 80 run one for the 9th. The Boys’ High players kept AGS in the field for 151 overs before succumbing for 297, a deficit of 2 runs. Campbell Martin scored 22, Jonty Fleck 22 not out, Ruben Love 25, Hugo Wakeling 67 and Henry Deans 92. This was an outstanding effort from the 1st XI batsmen.

Auckland decided to bat again and after progressing to 43 for 2 in 11 overs, the game was called a draw.

For the PNBHS 1st XI, it was “mission accomplished” as they retained the Oram Cup yet again.
