Hamilton Boys’ High School Match Report - Saturday 15 June 2019

The 1st XV played their first home game of the year on Saturday against the impressive Hamilton Boys’ High School.  The game started with both sides seeking field position at the behest of possession.  Hamilton won the early exchanges but there was some resilience shown defensively by the home side as we managed to hold the clinical Hamilton side out as the first quarter played out.  Hamilton were the first to score with a drive and resulting passing movement to width outflanking our back line.  Our first foray into the attacking half earned us a penalty.  From the kick off, play ebbed and flowed again as we defended well.  Once again, however, we were forced into errors and again we were broken down from a set piece strike.  Again, we replied with a penalty.  The pattern emerged through the rest of the game that we would defend well for periods of the game as Hamilton enjoyed the majority of possession.  If we were able to hold the opposition beyond the first two phases then they struggled to score.  When we had the ball, we struggled to get past three phases as our organisation and skill execution struggled to break down the Hamilton defence.  They had most success from their set piece strikes and as a team we need to continue to develop our defensive system and understanding. Hamilton were clearly the better team on the day and played some great rugby, fully deserving the 45-6 scoreline.

The team will look to regroup with a quick turnaround as New Plymouth Boys’ High School come to our number one on Thursday.
