Pasifika Trades Day

18 young men from our Pasifika group from both Years 11 and 12 participated in a Pasifika Trades Day today with Mr Johnson, Mr Mafi and Ms Tutavaha. Our young men spent the day visiting different trade organisations around Palmerston North in order to give our Pasifika students an idea of what the trades look like outside of school. The Pasifika Trades Day was formed to coincide with Subject Selection Week, aiming to provide our young men with opportunities to gain an insight into their pathways for 2020 and beyond, as well as possible future career aspirations.

The first stop on the visit was BCITO.  The Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) provides apprenticeship and supervisor qualifications for the New Zealand building and construction industry. The second stop was Brokenshire Plumbing with David Brokenshire and Hanson who is an Old Boy of PNBHS. Third stop of the day was ETECH.  ETECH specialises in steel engineering, using fabrication and laser cutting technology to manufacture an extensive array of products for commercial use through to the visual arts. Final stop of the day was Hopkins Farming Group where they were learning about farming machinery and engineering.

A big thank you to the trade organisations who opened up their doors for our Pasifika students today. It is an eye-opening experience for them and will assist them in their decision making for subject selections for next year.
