On Friday 13th young men in the Year 10 New Zealand Studies class went on a field trip through Whanganui / South Taranaki - using the region as our case study of New Zealand in the 19th Century.  The study included the relationship between Maori and the Whanganui River since the 1300s and aspects of European life into the early 20th Century.  The group visited sites of the military conflicts over land dispossession of Maori in the 1840s (Whanganui) and in the 1860s (South Taranaki).  As well, the early port towns and regional economics/social life were looked at during the journey and the excellent museums at Patea and Hawera (Tawhiti) provided outstanding overviews of things seen during our travels.
