Junior Hawke’s Bay Cricket Tournament

DAY ONE
The Year 9 Specials cricket team had their first game at the Junior Hawke’s Bay Tournament on Monday 25 November. Unfortunately, our first opponents had to withdraw so a composite Napier Boys’ High School team were used as a replacement.  Napier BHS, batting first, struggled to get any momentum into their innings as accurate bowling induced errors.  Napier BHS were bundled out for 74.  Riveen Samarasekara, Matt Rowe and Ethan Campbell all taking 3 wickets apiece.

PNBHS were positive in reply, achieving the target for one wicket off 12 overs. Jacob Duker top scoring with 24 not out.

A win to the Year 9 Specials by 9 wickets.

DAY TWO
On day two of the Junior Hawke’s Bay Cricket Tournament, the PNBHS Year 9 Specials took on Havelock North High School. Havelock, having been asked to bat first, lost regular wickets from the start. The Havelock opening batsman was the nephew of former black cap and current cricket commentator Simon Doull.  He was the sixth Havelock batsman to be dismissed with the score at 44 of which he had scored 43.  The remainder of the Havelock batsman were dismissed for a small total of 81.  Left arm spinner Tom Collier, opening the bowling, was able to take 3 wickets. Ethan Campbell and Matthew Rowe Bowled extremely well as the first change bowlers and also took 3 wickets apiece.

PNBHS got off to a fast start in response with Angus Stuart and Rory Trotter putting on 43 for the first wicket.  With the fall of the first wicket, batsman struggled to get a start on a tricky wicket that was keeping low with the odd ball popping off of a length.  Regular wickets brought nerves into play but Ethan Campbell was able to hit the winning runs. Angus Stuart top scored with 32.

A win to the Year 9 specials by 4 wickets.

DAY THREE
The Year 9 Specials cricket team took on St. John's College on day three of the Junior Hawkes Bay tournament.  Van Prenter won the toss and chose to bat first in the 50 over game to be played on artificial at St. John's.  PNBHS made a solid start with opening batsman Sam Kennett scoring 24 and Oliver Murray scoring 31 at first drop.  The dismissal of these two brought middle order players Matthew Rowe (34) and Ethan Campbell (35) combining for a fourth wicket partnership of 61.  From 146/4 the innings never really gained momentum with the last wicket falling on the last ball of the 50th over.  PNBHS ending up with a respectable 194.

St. John's lost an early wicket in response but began to form some meaningful partnerships with their opening batsman batting deep into their innings and at 140/7 it was game on.  Tom Collier came on to bring the game to a quick halt with 2 quick wickets.  St. John's ending 146 all out.

Rory Trotter with 3-18 and Ethan Campbell with 3-23 were the chief wicket takers.

A win to the Year 9 Specials by 48 runs.

DAY FOUR

The Year 9 Specials last game was against hosts Hastings BHS on Thursday.  Hastings BHS billet our boys each year and they are always fantastic hosts.

Hastings BHS batted first in the 35 over game.  They were able to get off to a fast start and at 110/5 off 25 overs, were set for a sizeable score.  Tight bowling from Ethan Campbell was able to stem the flow of runs through tight bowling and being able to take wickets.  Hastings BHS scoring  152 all out.

Ethan Campbell 3-14
Riveen Samarasekara 2-20
Sam Kennett 2-27

PNBHS lost a couple of early wickets in reply before Jacob Duker and Sam Kennett steadied the ship briefly.  Another flurry of wickets had the chase struggling at 58/6.  Bradley Hanegraaf and Matthew Rowe were able to bring PNBHS back into the game with a seventh wicket partnership of 40.  Bradley Hanegraaf, assisted by the lower order, were able to get PNBHS close but ultimately, PNBHS ended 12 runs short on 140/9.

Bradley Hanegraaf with 40 was the team's top run scorer.

A loss to the Year 9 Specials by 12 runs.  The team had a good week and hopefully come away from the tournament having learnt more about their own games and improved cricket awareness.
