PNBHS 1st XI vs Palmerston CC – 01/03/20 – Day 1 of 2

Winning the toss and batting seemed like a good idea at first, but at 19 for 5 in the 10th over, some doubts were creeping in. That is until Mr Davidson strode to the crease. He proceeded to put on an 83-run partnership with Bayley Latter, followed by an 88-run partnership with Regan Fleming, on the way to his second century for the 1st XI. PNBHS scored 235 all out, with Fleming contributing 22, Latter 28 and Mr Davidson last man out with a brutal 149 from 108 balls.

Palmerston put up some stern resistance at the start of their innings, but the first 2 wickets opened the gates and some good lines from the change bowlers soon had them on 81 for 6. The tail wagged a little, but they were all out for 119. Thomas Kirk took 2 for 31, Jonty Fleck 3 for 23 and Hunter Morrison 4 for 20.

With a lead of 116, Curtis Heaphy asked the opposition to follow on, which they did successfully, finishing the day on a staunch 43 without loss.

Resuming at 43, Palmerston were soon 1 batsman down. Some resistance was encountered by the 1st XI until Jonty Fleck came to the bowling crease. He picked up 3 wickets in his first 2 overs and Palmerston were soon 86 for 6. There followed a staunch 7th wicket stand where the Boys’ High bowlers and fielders were tested, and it wasn’t until Fleck was reintroduced that the wickets began to tumble again. The opposition were eventually bowled out for 253 with a lead of 137. Jonty Fleck led the wicket count with an Honours’ Board 7 for 67.

The PNBHS reply started brightly, with 32 from the first 5 overs before the first wicket fell. The brakes were put on the scoring after this as the batsmen rebuilt, but at 89 for 2, the match was called off as a draw with PNBHS winning on the first innings. Lachie Bradford made 24 and Jaiden Meyer 24 not out.

The win means that Boys’ High will now face Feilding in a play-off for 5th and 6th place in the MCA Prem 1 2-Day Competition.
