1st XV Training Squad v Lindisfarne College Match Report – Saturday 20 June.

After a long wait, the PNBHS 1st XV Training Squad finally got to play its first game of the season against Lindisfarne College.  The field was fairly sloppy with the recent rain but the intent from both teams was positive and a relatively open game was played.

The experience of playing in wintry conditions meant our game plan was to play territory through an accurate kicking game.  This eventuated and we spent large periods of the game in the oppositions half throughout the game.  We scored four tries in the process with one being conceded from a charge down.  The defence was pleasing with good connections and line speed making it hard for the opposition to advance the ball up the field.  Our set piece remains a work on but we showed with quality ball we were able to amount good strikes and make good yards through string carries.  Our discipline with the increased clarity from the referees around the breakdown and the offside lines was also pleasing and a good standard was set going forward in this area.

All in all it was a positive opening fixture with plenty of promising debuts from the younger members of the team. Our next game is away against Whanganui Collegiate this Saturday 27 June.  This will be the first time we have played this traditional foe in some time and is a fixture both sides will be looking forward to.
