Rathkeale College 1st XV vs PNBHS 2nd XV - Saturday 20 June

The 2nd XV headed over to Masterton to play their second pre-season game vs Rathkeale College 1st XV. The game started with Rathkeale camped in the PNBHS 22 and applying pressure. They threw plenty at the PNBHS line but the work in the week paid off as the 2nds managed to repel wave after wave of attacks. Unfortunately the penalty count began to mount meaning; the 2nd XV struggled to exit and eventually Rathkeale scored a well-worked try in the corner.

The 2nd XV continued to use their defence to apply pressure and from a charged down kick and a kick through, Malaki Masoe scored a try. The 2nd XV began to get on top and get their forwards into the game. They forced a penalty which was converted by Wade McNabb to lead 10-5 at the break.

Unfortunately a very poor start to the second half cost the team dearly. Missed tackles allowed Rathkeale to score a simple try before they scored again immediately from the kick off. More missed tackles and a lack of linespeed and poor decision making saw Rathkeale score two further tries and after 8 minutes of the second half, they were up 33-10.

To their credit the 2nd XV rallied and got back into the game. A couple of bursting runs from Tusi Mafi saw the 2nd XV camped in the Rathkeale 22, but they were unable to convert pressure into points. Final score 33-10. Some valuable lessons learnt again that the team must take forward as we head to Super 8.
