In the first half-year option of Year 10 Design and Visual Communication, students have been developing freehand sketching and instrumental drawing techniques to support their media design and product design projects. Matt Paewai-Young began the lantern design process by researching architectural design works, his chosen designer was the famous architect I.M. Pei who is well known for the renovation of Le Louvre. Matt incorporated the features from his research and developed a very intricate lantern design with drawing instruments. The progress of this project was severely interrupted and shortened due to the Covid-19 lock-down. However, he was encouraged by Mr. Kwan to draw up the patterns digitally in a combination of SketchUp, Illustrator and Laserworks software programmes at home. Through several testings, the composite card was finally laser-cut where all the panels were snuggly fitted together to ensure no glue is needed for the construction and assembly of the lantern.
