1st XV v Gisborne Boys’ High School – Saturday 22 August

After a postponement due to the change in alert levels, the Super Eight started up again with the arrival of Gisborne Boys’ High School.  After the disappointing result against New Plymouth, the Palmerston North Boys’ High School 1st XV was keen to put the talk in the last couple of weeks into action and regain some confidence before heading up to Napier and the Polson battle.

The rain cleared just before kick-off but the standard westerly zephyr was in play and the 1st XV were playing into it in the first half.  An early mistake from the visiting side allowed the 1sts to get into their attacking stride early with a sensible kicking game coming to the fore.  Two quick tries and a penalty had us race to a 13-0 lead after fifteen minutes, simply by exerting territorial pressure.  Gisborne finally got into our 22 and were gifted a fairly easy try after a defensive misread but we were able to re-establish our dominance, scoring another two tries and gaining a bonus point before halftime. 23 – 5 at oranges.

The second half started just as well with two quick tries before another from Gisborne.  The game seesawed a bit through the next fifteen minutes but we managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over with tries through quick phases and a dominant set piece.  The final score was 54 – 10 with nine tries scored.

When the final whistle blew, there was a certain degree of satisfaction around the performance as we managed to maintain our shape and game plan consistently through the game.  This stands us in good stead going forward.
