Tauranga Jazz Society are excited to announce a new initiative for 2020, the Spirit of Jazz Competition for young jazz composers.

TJS are calling young jazz composers to submit an original jazz work. Submissions will be judged by some of NZ’s best jazz educators. Winners will compete for two coveted National Youth Jazz Competition awards:

  • The Best Original Composition – Ken Mitchell Trophy plus $100 Music Planet voucher
  • The Best Performance of a NZ Composition – SOUNZ Trophy plus $50 SOUNZ voucher

Entry criteria:

Compositions must be new original material, for a combo with a minimum of 3 players and a maximum of 8. Note that vocalists are counted as players.

Video recordings of compositions should be between 3 to 8 minutes long, including any improvisation.

Composers and performers should be under 20 years of age as at 31 December 2020.

Composers must reside in Aotearoa.

How to enter:

Please provide a reduced score or lead sheet along with a video performance of the work.
