Clay Target Shooting report from National and North and South Island Championships

It has been a HUGE holiday break for the clay target shooting group. At the start of the holidays we had the South Island and National Championships ( now held in regions because of COVID-19 ) then late last week we had the North Island champs in Hamilton.

The South Island and National DTL champs

Having travelled to Hastings as the base for our region, our two teams started with the South Island DTL champs on the first Saturday of the break. While the collective of the A team was a wee way off our best, most shooters were there or thereabouts. Highlights of the day included Year 9 student Hayden Lourie who placed top junior for the region and Sam Bayley who placed 6th in the country for the Single Rise event.

Sunday saw us compete in the national champs. The weather bomb struck, meaning we faced sheeting rain and howling winds. Again, the collective of the A team was slightly off, but we had some fantastic individual results. Riley Hudson was named the ‘High Over All’ ( or national champion ) for the Points Score event with Josh Lourie form our B team named third boys. Josh also qualified for the North Island DTL team. Three of our shooters were selected for the Wellington regional rep team ( selected by Fish and Game regions ). They were Riley Hudson, Josh Lourie and Sam Bayley. Unfortunately, Sam had to travel so couldn’t compete.

North Island Championships

Last Thursday we headed to Hamilton for the North Island champs which also doubled as our Super 8 event. Things finally clicked and we placed 2nd for the North Island teams event and first for Super 8. Josh Bergerson was named the grand overall champion having won the ‘High Over All’ ( champion ) for single Barrel and placing 2nd boys for Points Score. Sam Bayley also continued his very consistent form by placing 2nd boys for Single Rise.

It has been a huge season for our young teams. They have listened, they have applied and they have shown a strong degree of ambition. The management and parent group could not be prouder!
