4th XI Cricket Match Report v Wanderers CC - Saturday 17 October

On Saturday 17/10 the 4th XI started their campaign against Wanderers CC. We always knew this would be a tough contest and the tone of the match was likely to depend on the toss. Unfortunately, we lost the toss and as expected were sent out to field. The opening bowling combination of Max Barber and Hamish Ramsay started well and were able to restrict scoring and minimise extras. The teams soon realised that the outfield conditions were not favourable for boundaries, as the masses of loose cut grass acted as an extra fieldsman or 5. An early dropped catch would prove to cost us, as the opening batsman proceeded to make 100 off 74 balls. The Wanderers decided to remove the outfield conditions from the game and realised that by just hitting 6's they could find the boundary. Although the rain gods provided some evidence of saving us with the draw, it wasn't enough to end the game as clearly the Wanderers were in higher favour.

To be fair, the 4th XI bowlers didn't bowl poorly, but anything with a bit of length was punished on the artificial wicket. Wickets steadily fell through the middle overs with a couple of good catches by Jack Gordon and Mr Macdonald, and a screamer in the slips by Logan Hey. Karlis Zvagulis managed to have the most success with the ball, picking up 3/65 and 2 wickets each to Kalani Rhodes and Jack Gordon. The Wanderers getting through to 274/9 off 40.

The run chase started poorly as wickets quickly fell in what seemed like 5 run intervals, with nothing really to write home about. Camryn Caffell top scored with 17 followed by Mr Gooch on 15, with no one else reaching double figures. The 4ths were bowled out for 57, losing by 217 runs. Only upwards from here.
