1ST XI CRICKET GILLETTE CUP QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT

PNBHS 1st XI VS Nelson College 1st XI – 02/11

Having won the toss, captain Curtis Heaphy followed the old adage of “bat First”. The Nelson opening bowlers put in a solid spell, getting the ball to “talk”. This led to both opening batsmen perishing and the slow process of a rebuild. Successive batsmen struggled to come to terms with the nature of the wicket and many got themselves out playing injudicious shots. Only Curtis Heaphy looked comfortable until he too skyed one and got caught. In a disappointing performance, PNBHS could only muster 120 all out in the 41st over. Heaphy top scored with 42.

Defending a low total, the Boys’ High bowlers needed to be at their best. Wickets in the 2nd and 3rd overs looked promising and the team saw a glimmer of hope. This proved to be short-lived, however, as the Nelson middle order ground their way to 99 before a final flurry of wickets saw them finish on 122 for 6 in 38 overs. Jett Donald-Charnley was the pick of the bowlers, with 3 for 24 from his allocated 10 overs.

This loss means that the team will play in the 3rd/4th place playoff on Tuesday.

PNBHS 1st XI VS Lindisfarne College 1st XI – 03/11

Losing the toss and asked to bowl, PNBHS started strongly, taking 2 wickets with the score on 15. This was followed by a staunch 3rd wicket stand, lasting more than 25 overs, until the 1st XI struck with 2 quick wickets. This started the slide and an improved bowling and fielding effort saw Lindisfarne bowled out for 160 in the 50th over. Regan Fleming took 2 for 23, Thomas Kirk 2 for 21 and Jett Donald-Charnley 3 for 19.

The opposition opening bowlers bowled an effective spell, taking 3 wickets for 34 runs by the 10th over. This brought Curtis Heaphy and Jonty Fleck together, who blunted the attack and then plundered the change bowlers in an unbroken stand of 101.  Rain then stopped play after 31 overs. Unable to resume, the game was awarded to PNBHS via the Duckworth/Lewis/Stern method. Fleck was 36 not out and Heaphy 62 not out.
