4th XI Match Report- 12/12/2020v - PNBHS 4th XI v Bloomfield CC

Winning the toss was the first victory for the 4Th XI this afternoon.  This would mean that all 11 players would get a bat and there was potential in getting home before 3:30.

Four overs into the first innings, the scoreboard gave everyone the impression that the 4th XI, yet to win a game this season, would become another victim to the unbeaten Bloomfield team.  Jacob Cowie and Zac Tutty falling early to a spell of good line and full length bowling from the BCC opener began the 4ths all-too-common demise.  But veteran pace bowler and newly appointed opening batsman Hamish Ramsay’s inspiring words, “batting the overs equals runs on the board” earlier in the week, didn’t fall on deaf ears.

The sixth over saw the fall of Hamish’s wicket (6 off 19 deliveries), bringing the combination of Wade McNabb and Karlis Zvagulis together.  A quick 23 from Wade made for exciting watching, punishing the short balls and reaching the boundary five times.  Karlis played a supporting role in rotating the strike.  Jack Gordon was in, then out, spooning one to a ring fielder, giving Campbell Woolley and Camryn Caffell the job of steadying the ship with the score 40/5.

While the somnolent scoreboard was a frequent sight, batting on the over side of drinks was uncommon territory for the 4th XI.  Campbell’s long levers muscled the ball over the boundary rope multiple times in a display of powerful stroke-play, while at the other end, Camryn punched the ball through gaps in the field, accumulating along the way.  Woolley was caught slogging to the boundary, falling on 23 off 24 balls, while Camryn lasted another ten overs, finishing on 42 off 74.  Matua Pomare and Max Barber closed out the innings; Matua’s slog-sweep for 6 runs and Max breaking his duck-streak being the close of innings highlights.

Wise words from Wade McNabb, “roll them for 40” echoed through the squad as they took to the field in an effort to defend their hard-fought 138/8.  The final ball of the sixth over saw Max Barber take his third wicket; cartwheeling the opening batsman and taking the edge of the next two, before carrying through to Wade’s gloves.  Max finished with bowling figures of 3/24 from his 8 overs.  Soon after, a successful LBW appeal was given to Kalani Rhodes, followed by Jacob Cowie taking a low-diving catch at mid-on, closing out Kalani’s impressive 2/18 from 8 overs.

BCC came off the pitch for drinks at 71-5, in the driving seat.  Campbell Woolley’s first ball after the break poled the danger man,  a yorker beating the bat.  This begun a string of wickets by Campbell: another catch at mid-on, this time taken by Zac Tutty, and two more beautifully executed yorkers cannoning into the base of the stumps.  Matua’s offspin pinned the remaining batsmen to the crease and the asking run rate climbed steadily.  The first ball of the 37th over proved to be the breaking point for BCC, and the batsmen’s effort to return for a second run was foiled by the quick fielding of Jack Gordon.  BCC finished all out 108/10, ending their winning streak and breaking the 4th XI’s winning famine.  Campbell Woolley 4/11 off 7 overs the pick of the bowlers.

A massive team effort made for great watching.  Only one of the seven bowlers had an economy over 4.0 and time at the crease was valued rather than swiping across the line of the ball in the hopes of glory.  Well played, Lads, and long may it continue.
