Cricket Report – 1st XI Prem A T20 competition – 24/01/2021

Game 1 VS Feilding CC

Playing on artificial in a wild westerly, Boys’ High lost the toss and were asked to bowl first. The upwind bowlers struggled to hit their lengths and Feilding took full toll, with 5 wind-assisted sixes and 8 fours. The PNBHS bowlers stuck to their task, however, and managed to take regular wickets and, with some tight fielding, kept the score to 130 for 7. Fred McVerry, with 2 for 28 and Jonty Fleck (2 for 16) continued their wicket-taking form.

Josh Campbell and Bayley Latter made a promising start with the bat, putting on 48 in 9 overs before the first wicket fell. The middle order was then shackled by some tight bowling, putting pressure on the run-rate and at 87 for 3 in the 16th over, some desperation was needed. Mr Davidson and Jonty Fleck provided this by scoring at strike rates over 150 for 3 overs, before Lachie (The Finisher) Bradford was able to strike the winning run with 2 balls to go. This resulted in a tight win to PNBHS by 5 wickets. Josh Campbell made 23 and Bayley Latter 42.

Game 2 VS Marist CC

Losing the toss and bowling first again, the 1st XI bowlers showed that they had learned from the previous game and found their lines and lengths from the outset. Marist wickets fell with regularity and they were unable to “get away”. Tight fielding and scoreboard pressure led to 2 runouts, before the mid-afternoon malaise set in and some costly dropped catches allowed Marist to accelerate towards the end to finish on 107 for 6. The most miserly bowler was Bayley Latter with 1 for 15 from 4 overs.

The top order batting once again made a good start, scoring at a good rate. 69 for 3 in the 12th over allowed Jonty Fleck and Mr Davidson to come in and administer the last rites to take the team to 108 for 3 in 15.3 overs. Lachie Bradford scored 21, Jonty fleck 30 not out and Josh Campbell 35, in a comprehensive 7-wicket win for PNBHS.

This means that the team will play in a virtual semi-final against Freyberg CC next Saturday to see which team will play the second game.
