3rd XI v Marist - Saturday 13 February

The 3rd XI played Marist at Wallace Park in a battle for the top 8. Both teams even on points but the 3rds in 8th place with a superior net run rate.  The 3rds lost the toss and were asked to field on a beautiful Palmerston North day. The 3rds started bowling very well with Marist unable to find the gaps, going for a miserly 29 off the opening 10. The Marist batsmen then freed their arms getting though to 101-1 at drinks. Marist didn’t look like stopping and the runs were flowing as the opening batsman brought up his century hitting balls to and over the boundary all around the park. When he finally fell to a sharp catch, 3 more wickets fell quickly. This slowed the scoring but Marist still amassed a total of 226-7 off 40 overs. The 3rds tried 10 bowlers in an attempt to stem the flow of runs with Kieran Gill returning the best figures of 2-23.  The 3rds started positively using the pace on the ball and the quick outfield to find the boundary. However regular wickets fell including a couple of runouts and the required run rate was steadily rising.  In the end the 3rds were never close to challenging the total, losing the final wicket with 1 ball remaining for 131. Rory Trotter 27*, Oliver Murray 24. A loss by 95 runs.
