New Zealand Secondary Schools Track, Field and Road Race Championships

 Tauranga, 10-13 December 2020

 

A team of 12 completed with distinction to record the following outstanding set of results.  All boys made the semi-finals, a number also recording personal best performances.

The weather was fine with a strong wind in the home straight.  The school won 4 gold, a silver and a bronze.

Individual results were:

Junior (U16):

Braxton Kauri - 100m Hurdles 14.96 secs (PB 9th); 1st in 300 Hurdles 40.14 E.T. (39.9 secs H.T.).  A gutsy performance in a tight finish, a personal best and new school record.

Forbes Kennedy - 1st in Long Jump 6m 54cm - a top effort; 200m finalist in a close run race - 7th 23.49 sec (PB).

Zack Roberts - 100m 12.2 secs - semi-finalist (PB); High Jump 15th at 1m 75cm.

Dylan Calder - 100m 12.00 secs (PB); 200m 25.00 secs (PB), semi-finalist in both events.

Senior (U20):

Angus Lyver had an outstanding meeting - 3rd in 200m 22.61 secs H.T.); Long Jump 2nd at 6m 80cm; Javelin 6th 48m 82cm - selected in NZ Secondary Schools team.

Ahmed Shehata - semi-finalist 100m at 11.87 secs; semi-finalist 200m at 24.25 secs.

Dirki Botha - semi-finalist in 400m at 52.75 secs.

Greg Austin - semi-finalist in 400m at 53.81 secs; 800m 2 min 15 secs.

Aiden Porritt - 6th in 300m Hurdles at 41.57 - a gutsy performance; semi-finalist in 400m at 52.65 secs.

Caleb Evans - semi-finalist in 200m at 23.98 secs.

Samuel Stichbury - 33rd in 1500m at 4 mins 26.6 secs; 25th in 6k Road Race

James Dennis - 40th in 6k Road Race

RELAYS

Junior - 4 x 100m - 1st in a tight finish the team exhibited outstanding changes with Dylan Calder withstanding all challenges in the last leg.  Other team members were Zack Roberts, Braxton Kauri, Forbes Kennedy - 45.30 E.T.) - a good time and a top team effort.

Senior - 4 x 100m - 1st in 44.54 secs.  A top team effort from Aden Porritt, Caleb Evans and two superb changes and legs from Dirki Botha and a superb finish from Angus Lyver (5th to 1st - brilliant).

This double result in winning both titles is a first for the school - a rare feat to register.  Previous best 1997 - seniors 1st and juniors 2nd.

4 x 400 seniors 6th - a gutsy effort gained will be good for future finals experience.  Team members were G Austin, A Porritt, B Kauri, D Botha - 3 mins 34.6 secs)

These results were built around an outstanding work ethic, proving school athletes can compete against the best if you train on a regular basis.

This was a great effort making this achievement a tough yardstick for future teams to strive for.
