1st XV v Wellington College - Friday 2 April

The PNBHS 1st XV retained the 143 shield for the fifth consecutive year after their 26-20 win over Wellington College last Friday 2 April. Captain Leo Gordon was presented with the shield at assembly on Wednesday on behalf of the team.

Match report below:

The 1st XV travelled to Wellington College for their traditional fixture. With a trophy on the line and Wellington College presenting their 1st XV jerseys for their first home game of the season, a challenging afternoon was promised.

PNBHS started the game well and some strong early play was rewarded with a try to Eli Odenryn. Wellington College responded immediately from a quickly taken tap penalty where they created space and scored in the corner. PNBHS then put together multiple phases for Cody Borlase to stroll in to restore their advantage. A penalty from Wellington bought them closer and although PNBHS finished the half strongly, they were unable to quite finish off the chances they created.

The half time chat focused around maintaining the energy but improving our accuracy of execution as we felt our errors were keeping Wellington in the contest.

PNBHS started the second half well and good hands from the forwards created a try for Anitoni Metui before Tadhg O'Connor seized on a loose ball and scampered 50m to extend the lead. Wellington responded again with a close range try and buoyed by this took the game to PNBHS. The 1st XV responded with an outstanding defensive effort, despite a yellow card, to hold them at bay until a try at the death reduced the deficit further.

Overall a much-improved performance and pleasing to retain the 143 shield for the fifth consecutive year. The team now have a weekend off before travelling to Hamilton to play St Paul's Collegiate on Saturday 17 April.
