PNBHS 1st XI Cricket VS Christchurch Boys’ High School 1st XI Report

The 1st XI was lucky enough to beat the Palmy Spring weather and play the first game of the season on the artificial turf at Ongley Park. PNBHS won the toss and elected to bat first in cold, blustery conditions. The innings started well, with the openers taking toll on any loose deliveries. Once the Christchurch bowlers found their rhythm, the scoring rate slowed, and one wicket was soon followed by the second. This brought Curtis Heaphy to the wicket and, together with Bayley Latter, they put on a 130-run partnership to take the team to 161 for 3 in the 43rd over. The middle and lower order then accelerated the scoring to take the team to a very competitive total of 226 for 6 from the allotted 50 overs. Heaphy scored 59 and Latter 91.

The 1st XI bowlers started well and “put the squeeze on” early, limiting Christchurch to 25 for 2 in the 13th over. They managed to consolidate and scored steadily, until the PNBHS spin attack took control and the pressure built up, resulting in 3 runouts. As Christchurch tried to keep up with the run rate, the bowlers managed to mop up the tail to have them all out for 141 in 41.4 overs. A win to the 1st XI by 85 runs. Fred McVerry took 2 for 43, Bayley Latter 2 for 29, and Aadesh Ganugapati 2 for 19.

This was a good win against a quality team, and it bodes well for the rest of the season.
