New Plymouth Tennis Exchange 2022 – Match Report

The Junior and Intermediate PNBHS tennis team played New Plymouth Boys’ High School at Manawatu Lawn tennis club on Wednesday. The weather was mostly fine with clouds in the morning which gradually cleared into a fine, sunny afternoon. The Intermediate team, in order of rank, was: Henry Manktelow, Michael Nagy, Johnny Pratt, and Fletcher Lochhead. The team endured some challenging matches against similarly ranked players.

Henry Manktelow had a long 3 set match. Manktelow lost his first set in a 6-7 tie break, but made a comeback, winning 6-4, 6-2. Michael Nagy played an impressive two sets and won 6-0, 6-1 Johnny Pratt won his first set 6-3, but unfortunately lost his second set 2-6. However, he made a solid come-back to win the third set 6-3. Fletcher Lochhead had a challenging match against Thomas Grieve. The first set was extremely close, but unfortunately, Lochhead did not prevail and lost in a tie break 7-6, following a 6-3 loss.

In the doubles, Henry Manktelow and Michael Nagy won their match in two straight sets 6-1, 6-3.

Johnny Pratt and Fletcher Lochhead lost their doubles match in a third set, super tie, 6-3, 0-6, 10-6.

The Junior team ( Matty Leary, Fynn Busuttin, Miller Priest-O Hara, and Luca Deegan), had some testing games against a strong team. Unfortunately, New Plymouth prevailed in the Junior section. However, Matty Leary was in fine form and over-powered his opponent. Leary had a relentless return game and came out on top with a 6-3, 6-4 win.

Matty Leary and Fynn Busuttin had a challenging and close match to New Plymouth’s Henry Moffat and Tae Lallu. Unfortunately, New Plymouth came out on top with a two-set win 7-5, 6-3.

Miller Priest-O Hara and Luca Deegan were the last doubles match for the afternoon. They had a challenging two sets, losing in two super tie breaks 7-6, 7-6.

Overall, the PNBHS Intermediate team won 4-2 and the Junior team lost 5-1. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable occasion for all involved.
