Gabriel Crisp, Jason Gui and Teo Jaurengui-Na finished first place at the Massey Manawatū Maths and Stats Competition for Year 12 students. The quiz is about engaging students in fun maths and stats, to solve problems as best as they can with just pens, paper and their minds.
At 1.30pm on Thursday 29/06 three Palmy Boys’ High year 12s competed in a one hour Massey Manawatū Maths and Stats quiz against other invited schools, including teams from Hawkes Bay. The quiz had two parts. Gabriel Crisp, Jason Gui and Teo Jaurengui-Na all answered difficult problem solving questions for 50 minutes. Teams had the opportunity to answer two questions at a time, with up to 35 questions available in increasing difficulty. The boys finished this section in the lead. Next was a difficult optimisation problem that they were given up to 10 minutes to solve, with extra points for finishing the problem quickly. They took their time, carefully checking options while other teams turned in answers, and finishing with about three minutes to go.
Overall the Palmy Boys’ team finished first, with 26 out of 38 possible points.
