Marae Visit

On Tuesday 7th May, the year 12 and 13 students studying Te Reo Māori visited Te Kupenga o Te Mātauranga at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa to learn about the different kōwhaiwhai (traditional Māori patterns) done by ex-students who graduated from the old teachers' college, Massey University that was once situated down Centennial Drive.

The purpose of the visit was for the students to gain new ideas and inspiration from the kōwhaiwhai and to incorporate their own stories around identity or their interests through the language of kōwhaiwhai. Kōwhaiwhai is a language known to Māori that symbolises a person's journey, to signify growth to name a few.

We would like to acknowledge Haami Hawkins (Pou Ārahi Mātauranga) for sharing your knowledge of the history of Te Kupenga o Te Mātauranga and welcoming our students in. Thank you to Gary Butler and his team for arranging the visit and for their hospitality.

Ko te tohu o te rangatira, he manaaki
Ko te tohu o te mātauranga, he māramatanga.
