In Social Studies, our Year 9 students are learning about Te Ao Māori, and mana whenua of the Manawatū . One of the topics of study earlier in this term had been mau rākau.

Two Social Studies classes, 9MX and 9NB, were lucky to be shown what these weapons looked like in real life, and the ways in which they were used. Pa Josh Strickland, our Head of Māori - and one of Aotearoa’s mau rākau experts - shared the mātauranga with these students which gave insights that both classes would not have attained if it wasn’t for his expertise.

A big thank you to the senior Reo Māori students who also demonstrated to us their proficiency and the skills they have developed under the guidance of Mr. Strickland. The crossing over of our Social Studies and Māori Departments reflects exciting opportunities as part of our staff's mātauranga journey.
