Palmerston North Boys' High School is the only school in New Zealand that still holds boxing championships thanks largely to the work that Billy Meehan does. Each year approximately 100 boys compete in the school boxing champs. Boxing is a contact sport and this event is run under strict guidelines. Preliminary bouts are in term four and are held in the school gym at lunchtimes leading up to the finals night in a ring in the school hall. To get into the ring in front of your peers shows a lot of courage and determination.
Joseph Parker visits PNBHS - June 2015
New Zealand heavyweight boxer Joseph Parker visited PNBHS to meet boxers involved in the annual boxing competition ahead of his fight against German Yakup Saglam (June 2015) in Palmerston North. His trainer, and former Olympic silver medalist, Kevin Barry, also attended to pass on his knowledge and experience to our young men.
