Whakarāpopoto kaupapa

  • Kapa Haka

Tauti mai kia rongo ai i ngā hīhī o Tanerore!

Kapa haka allows all students an opportunity to be immersed in Te Ao Māori (The Māori world).

     The Purpose:

    ·        To nourish, nurture and encourage our young men to become involved in kapa haka.

    ·        To enhance self-worth, self-esteem, pride and a positive identity of being Māori.

    Super 8 Cultural Festival:

The Super 8 Cultural Festival is an annual event which allows the eight schools to showcase the cultural aspects of their school. This event consists of kapa haka, pasifika, drama, debating, choir, stage band to name few.

    Te Piringa:

Te Piringa is a kapa haka is a whānau made up of four secondary schools, namely Freyberg High School, Palmerston North Girls' High School, Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Mana Tamariki and Palmerston North Boys' High School. The group have been title holders in the past and this is recognition of the hard work and tutorship within the whānau.

     Upcoming tours: Thailand

In 2019, a contingent of young students travelled on an International Cultural Exchange to Thailand. The experience for our students was life changing, and it built on, the already apparent leadership qualities of these young men. It also provided a chance for them to engage with another culture and share our rich Māori tikanga and heritage with others. We would like to give other students this great opportunity in 2022. More details to come…

“Blood, sweat and yes… even tears are shed but we wouldn’t have it any other way!! Kapa Haka is empowering, encompassing, inspiring and definitely exhausting!!”  – Pāpā Daws 2011

Kapa haka practice sessions start early in Term 1. Boys interested in being involved need to register their interest with Pā Josh Strickland.
