Year 10 Mana Potential Careers Day

On Wednesday 6th of September, a small number of the Mana Potential Group were able to spend the day in and around Palmerston North exploring possible future career options.

Students visited AB Equipment; a workshop specialising in heavy forestry, handling and construction machinery.  Branch Manager, Mike Searle, and Service Manager, Stuart Scott, showed the group through the workshop pointing out possible career opportunities in the industry, as well as advising the students of the subjects required at school to help make it happen.

Our next stop was the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation, who are appointed by the government to develop professional apprenticeship qualifications for the building trade.  Wendy Robinson, the Skills Broker for BCITO, showed the students a range of opportunities available.  Students were given an outline of the varying number of trades within the industry, what employers want from young workers, and the best way of securing a position and a possible apprenticeship.

Our last stop was with James Stuart at his family's dairy farm.  The students were given a run-down of the dairy industry in New Zealand and its importance to many stakeholders, worldwide.  Next was a tour of the relatively new rotary milking shed, where the students were able to see first-hand the diverse range of technologies used in rural environments today, including automated drafting, feeding and electronic ID tracking.

The Mana Potential students would like to thank Mr Johnson, the school's Gateway and Vocational Pathways Coordinator, for organising the day out, as well as the local businesses that allowed us the chance to experience what their industry is about, and what it could potentially offer our students in the future.
