NZSS BOYS’ 1st XI CUP FINALS – GAME 2 VS HUTT INTERNATIONAL BOYS’ SCHOOL

After the disappointment of the first day, the 1st XI were in a vengeful frame of mind as they took the field after losing the toss. Jack Harris set the tone with a tight first over, beating the bat at will. Unfortunately, the other opener, Cam Harridge had failed to recover from a rotator cuff strain and was unable to take the field and his replacement, James Stratton injured his elbow after 2 balls. Up stepped the first day’s man-of-the-match, Tom Tremain who not only finished the over, but bowled a further 4 at 4.2 runs per over. But it was Jack who was the destroyer-in-chief as he ripped the heart out of the HIBS top order, taking 3 for 6 in his opening spell of 6 overs. The second period of play saw some consolidation from the batsmen, but the Finn Martin (3 for 11 from 10) soon wrested back control and allowed Bryn Wilson, Ben O’Connor and Rishabh De to mop up the tail with the aid of some tidy catching in the field and 2 stumpings from wicket keeper, Ruben Love. HIBS were all out for 123 in the 46th over.

The PNBHS batsmen made a solid start, batting responsibly and rotating the strike for an opening stand of 31. 3 quick wickets brought Bryn Wilson and James Stratton (after a remarkable recovery from his injury) together and with Bryn looking solid at one end, James unleashed and made the boundaries look too small. This allowed Bryn to grow into his role and he accelerated with some fine strokeplay to bring the game to a close with the 1st XI on 127 for 3 in the 30th over. Bryn scored a faultless 34 and James an aggressive 46.

This is the type of attitude the team needs to maintain for the rest of the week.

Wednesday, the 1st XI take on Otago Boys’ on Fitzherbert Park.
