1st XI Cricket v Wellington College – Day 1

When Captain, Bryn Wilson won the toss, he had no hesitation in electing to bat on the school’s number 1 pitch. The Wellington bowlers soon found their rhythm and extracted good movement, giving the Boys’ High openers a torrid time. After they departed early, Curtis Heaphy and Bryn worked hard and showed a lot of patience in putting together a good, settling partnership. This became the order of the day as the middle and lower order constructed meaningful partnerships, which kept the opposition in the field all day. PNBHS were eventually all out for 288, after 102.2 overs, setting up an intriguing second day. Hugo Wakeling scored 29, Logan Love 31, Mitch Leach 41, Ruben Love 50 and Bryn Wilson 62 in a disciplined display of batting under tough conditions.

The second day’s play (Monday 19 February) starts at 10am.

1st XI Cricket v Wellington College – Day 2

The second day started with Wellington finding it difficult batting against some tight bowling and fielding. Only managing to score 81 for 2 after 32 overs, with their “gun” batsman in the pavilion, they decided to make a “sporting” declaration 207 runs behind. This was reciprocated by PNBHS as they batted for 7 overs and declared their second innings on 38 for 5, leaving Wellington to chase 245 in 2 hours and 35 minutes.

To their credit, the Wellington batsmen tried to score quickly, but the high standard of fielding was maintained as catches stuck and a run-out was achieved. Wickets continued to fall until, at 7 wickets down for 147, the opposition decided to “shut up shop” and the game ended in a draw. The bowlers shared the wickets.

Overall, it was a good effort from the 1st XI as they showed grit and determination in both batting and in the field.
