Each Tuesday Glenn Stringer, Henry Bennik, Elijah Brooks-Bowen and James Waterson leave Palmerston North early and make the journey to Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre near Masterton where they are completing a practical agriculture course through the Primary Industries Trades Academy.

The Trades Academy is a practical agricultural course aimed at providing senior students with skills and experience in the primary industries so that they are able to take advantage of the career opportunities that are available.  Glenn explained that they are given the opportunity to develop a wide range of practical skills, with a real emphasis on how to complete those tasks safely in a farm environment.

So far they have covered the use of motorbikes and four wheelers for farm work – including units on basic maintenance and safe handling, working with and moving stock, fencing and yard work.

Glenn really enjoys the practical ‘hands-on’ nature of the course, as well as the opportunity to learn to get on and work with a range of different people.

If you are interested in finding out about the Trades Academy courses that are available through PNBHS please talk to Mr Adams, the Careers Advisor.
