It was a vastly different Marist team which showed up for day 2 of this fixture. A young PNBHS team would have to face 4 Manawatu reps, 1 Central Stag and 1 Black Cap. It was obvious that the opposition’s tactic was to blast some quick runs and then bowl Boys’ High out for an innings victory.

The PNBHS bowlers did their best to thwart the batting side’s tactics by bowling good lines and making quick scoring difficult. Backed up by good fielding, they kept the pressure up and soon wickets began to fall. Marist were forced to bat for a further 30 overs, before they succumbed with a 140 run lead. Josh West finished with the excellent figures of 13 overs, 3 for 21 and Levi Woolston and Hugo Wakeling each took 2 wickets.

Faced with batting for 4 hours and 20 minutes to save the game, the 1st XI batsmen set about their task with grim determination. Facing some hostile and accurate bowling, they batted time for survival and set out to frustrate the fielding side. All of the PNBHS players gave good account of themselves and as the sessions, hours and minutes were counted down, they showed staunch resistance to eke out a draw and finish the match on 148 for 7. Hugo Wakeling made 23 from 61 balls, Campbell Martin 23 from 90 balls and Regan Fleming 40 not out from 113 balls.

It is heartening to see a new side showing the guts and determination to foot it with quality opposition.

On Thursday 24 January, the 1st XI takes on The Hutchins School, a touring side from Tasmania on the PNBHS no 1 field from 10 AM. Then the team travels to Tauranga on Sunday morning for the Super 8 tournament.
